  10.    The computer loads a program
  11. from a disk into the RAM.  Hard
  12. disks usually spin at 3600 revo-
  13. lutions per minute and floppies
  14. run at 300 RPM. The hard disk
  15. can hold more information than
  16. a floppy, but their principal
  17. of operation is the same.
  18.     The surfaces of a disk are
  19. coated or plated with a magnetic
  20. metal.  A small recording head
  21. is placed very near each
  22. surface. The head can be moved
  23. in and out along the radius of
  24. the disk, so that it can read
  25. or write along any of many
  26. tracks, called cylinders.
  27.    As you probably know, if you
  28. move a magnet past a wire, an
  29. electric current is generated.
  30. This is how atomic generating
  31. stations work. An atomic pile
  32. turns water into steam, the
  33. steam flows past fans, making
  34. them turn.  The fans are
  35. connected to magnets and the
  36. magnets spin within coils of
  37. wire, creating lots of
  38. electricity. This is also how
  39. disks work. Spots on the disks

  42. are magnetized, representing bits
  43. of bytes. As the disk spins by a
  44. small coil in the head, as the
  45. spots pass, spikes of electricity
  46. are produced.  These spikes are
  47. translated into bytes and passed
  48. to the CPU and the RAM.
  49.     If you run a current through
  50. a wire near a magnetizable
  51. metal, the metal will become
  52. magnetized. This is how writing
  53. to a disk is done.  As the disk
  54. turns past the coil in the head,
  55. the coil is energized every time
  56. an "on" bit is to be written to
  57. the disk, resulting in a
  58. magnetized spot. The switching on
  59. and off of the electricity
  60. flowing through the head is very
  61. fast.
